Auld Scots Regiments:

RSDGThe Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys) (1971-present)

History: Formed in 1971 by the amalgamation of the Royal Scots Greys (2nd Dragoons) and 3rd Carabiniers (Prince of Wales’s Dragoon Guards).

Motto: Second to none.

History: Raised in 1678 as the Royal Regiment of Scots Dragoons (2nd Royal North British Dragoons in 1751).

Motto: Second to none.

Amalgamated into the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards in 1971.

 


SGThe Scots Guards (1661-present)

History: Raised in 1642 as Argyle’s Regiment (re-raised as Scottish Footguards 1661), brought on to English establishment as Scotch Guards in 1686, (Scots Fusilier Guards in 1831, Scots Guards in 1877.

Motto: Nemo Me Impune Lacessit (No one provokes me with impunity).

  • Hepburn’s Regiment (1633-78)
  • 1st or Royal Regiment of Foot (1678-1881)
  • The Royal Scots (1881-2006)

History: Raised in 1633 by Sir John Hepburn by Royal Warrant granted by Charles I for service in France, and returned to England in 1661 (known as Hepburn’s, Douglas’s and Dumbarton’s Regiment until given the title The Royal Regiment of Foot in 1679.

Motto: Nemo me impune lacessit (No one provokes me with impunity).

RHFThe Royal Highland Fusiliers (Princess Margaret’s Own Glasgow and Ayrshire Regiment) (1959-2006)

  • The Royal Scots Fusiliers (21st Regiment)(1678-1959)
  • The Highland Light Infantry (71st HLI) (1777-1959)
  • The 74th Highland Regiment (1787-1881)

History: Formed in 1959 by the amalgamation of the Royal Scots Fusiliers and the Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment).

Motto: Montis insignia Calpe (the badge of the Rock of Gibraltar).

HLIThe Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment) (1777-1959)

History: Raised in 1777 as the 73rd Foot (71st Foot in 1786) and in 1787 as the 74th Highland Regiment (74th Foot in 1816). These two regiments became the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Highland Light Infantry in 1881.

Motto: Montis insignia Calpe (the badge of the Rock of Gibraltar).

 

Amalgamated in 1959 with the Royal Scots Fusiliers to become the Royal Highland Fusiliers.


KOSBThe Kings Own Scottish Borderers (1689-2006)

History:

  • Raised in 1689 as the Earl of Leven’s Regiment
  • 25th Foot in 1751
  • 25th (Edinburgh) Regiment until 1881.

Mottoes: Nisi Dominus Frustra (Unless the Lord be with us all is in vain); In veritate religionis confido (I believe in the truth of my faith); Nec aspera terrent (Nor do difficulties deter); In this sign conquer.

  • The 42nd Royal Highland Regiment (1725-1881)
  • The 73rd (Perthshire) Regiment (1779-1881)

History: Raised in 1739 as the Highland Regiment (43rd) (42nd Foot in 1751) and in 1758 as the 2nd Battalion of the 42nd Regiment (73rd Highland Regiment in 1780). These two regiments became the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) in 1881.

  • The 72nd Duke of Albany’s Own Highlanders (1778-1881)
  • The 78th Highland Regiment (The Ross-shire Buffs) (1793-1881)
  • The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders (1881-1961)
  • The 79th Cameron Highlanders (1793-1881)

History: Formed in 1961 by the amalgamation of the Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, The Duke of Albany’s) and The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders.

Amalgamated in 2006 to become the 4th Bat. of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Amalgamated in 1961 with the QO Cameron Highlanders to become the Queens Own Highlanders.


QOCHThe Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders (1881-1961)

History: Raised in 1793 as the 79th Foot or Cameronian Volunteers (79th Foot or Cameron Highlanders in 1806).

 

 

 

Amalgamated in 1961 with the Seaforth Highlanders to become the Queens Own Highlanders.

  • The 75th Stirlingshire Regiment (1787-1881)
  • The 92nd Gordon Highlanders (1794-1881)

History: Raised in 1787 as the Highland Regiment (75th Foot in 1809) and in 1794 as the 100th Foot (92nd Foot in 1798). These two regiments became the 1st and 2nd Battalions of The Gordon Highlanders in 1881.

Motto: Bydand (Firm).

  • The 93rd Sutherland Highlanders (1799-1881)

History: Raised in 1794 as the 98th Argyllshire Highlanders (91st Foot in 1809) and in 1799 as the 93rd Highlanders. These two regiments became the 1st and 2nd Battalions of Princess Louise’s (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) in 1881.

Mottos: Sans peur (Without fear); Ne obliviscaris (Do not forget).
